Breaking Padlocks is all about learning how security works in the world around us… and how to break in. In the course we will be taking apart the mechanisms, both physical and digital, that keep us safe in our daily lives. In the first unit we will delve specifically into the art of lock picking. By the end of this unit each student will understand the way locks have changed over time, the principles that make them work and, most fun, how to pick them. In the second unit we will be doing a similar thing, only turning our eyes towards encryption and data security. We will be learning how our data is kept safe from hackers with algorithms and then learning how to beat those algorithms. At the end of the course each student will have the choice between focusing on cryptography or lock picking and complete a project that demonstrates their knowledge on the topic.
Learning Goals
Learning 1
By the end of the course each student will have a fundamental understanding of how digital and physical security systems in the world around them works.
Learning 2
By the end of the course each student will be able to pick locks with standard pins (The Master No. 2) and understand how more advanced security measures feel and why they work.
Learning 3
By the end of the course students will know the main flaws in online security and be able to break simple encryption.
If the course has a CS requirement students will understand how to write their software with security in mind and will have written code that can solve word ciphers.
